Storm Imogen battered Cornwall through Sunday night and into Monday morning, bringing with it 80mph winds and wave heights of over 19m measured off the Cornish coast.

Here’s some of the most dramatic pictures taken on the Cornish coast, showing the awesome and devastating power of mother nature. Batten down those hatches and remember to stay safe 🙂

One of the best places to watch the storms. This was the scene from Porthleven harbour on Monday. Jaw dropping shot by local photographer Lizzie Churchill

This dramatic photo shows how the extremely high tides on Perranporth beach have left The Watering hole Pub teetering on the edge of the sand bank, only a few meters from being washed away. UPDATE – the pub survived high tide yesterday evening 🙂

Sunset in Cornwall – Holywell Bay Beach, Newquay

sunset time-lapse Holywell Bay beach, Newquay Cornwall

We may be a little biased, but in our mind there’s no better place to watch a sunset than on a Cornish beach with the sand between your toes, the fresh sea breeze on your face and the soothing sounds of the waves lapping against the shore.

To show you just how magical they are, we recently took a trip to Holywell Bay beach, located just outside of Newquay and filmed the sunset. We clambered up the huge sand dunes to get the best view, put down a blanket and watched as the sky glowed pink and the sun dipped below the horizon, gull rock beautifully silhouetted to its side. They say the best things in life are free, and a sunset in Cornwall is certainly one of them 🙂 if you’re on holiday in Cornwall, make sure you take the time to see one!

A big tip for sunsetters…
Cornwall has lots of microclimates. If the weather is cloudy inland it doesn’t necessarily mean its cloudy on the coast and visa-versa, so before you set off check out our live beach webcams page, which will give you a great indication of what the weather is like on the coast!

Cornwall in March

Cornwall in March

March 2nd – Perranporth Beach

As the evenings started to get that little bit longer, more people were able to enjoy sunsets like this one taken by The Watering Hole.

March 3rd – Porth Kidney Sands, Hayle

We blew away the cobwebs and took a trip to Porth Kidney Sands, located in between Hayle and St Ives. Considered the mecca of dog friendly beaches in Cornwall, at low tide the sand seems to go on for ever!

Clear blue skies and empty beaches. A gorgeous photo by Hellesveor Holidays of Porthmeor beach basking in the spring sun.

March 8th – Porthgwarra Cove, near Land’s End

Off the beaten track: Harbour Cove, Padstow

Beautiful flat golden sands of Harbour Cove, Padstow in North Cornwall

Padstow Harbour

When you think of Padstow, you think of fishing boats, bustling streets and….Rick Stein ;-). Around the harbour, there’s always a hive of activity with fishermen at work and visitors at play, exploring the narrow streets, taking in it’s charm with a pasty in hand whilst the friendly turnstones scurry along behind you hoping that you drop a crumb or two. It’s a beautiful little place with a lovely atmosphere, one where you can sit for hours just watching the world go by.

It’s not just pasties and posh fish & chips though. A short walk along the coastal path from the town centre and you’ll discover the beautiful scenery of the Camel Estuary, of which the banks are lined with soft white sand with the shallow water gently lapping against the shore, perfect for paddling.

Most people stop there, and why not. Beautiful views and close to the town centre, but if you’re looking for something a bit more secluded and away from the hustle and bustle, tucked away around the corner is the relatively unknown Harbour Cove; a beautiful unspoilt beach, backed by small grassy dunes with spectacular views over the Camel Estuary and across to neighbouring beach Daymer Bay. Harbour Cove is also the only beach on the Padstow side of the Estuary that is dog friendly all year.

You can get to Harbour Cove two ways. Either by travelling by car to the seasonal grassy car park located close to Harbour Cove (Sat Nav -PL28 8HR) and then walking the last stage to the beach, or via the coast path from the town, which is a lumpy bumpy 2 mile round trip, so make sure you’ve packed your sunscreen, sandwiches and drink!

Explore Harbour Cove beach in Padstow

Above: The pink route is the route along coastal path that can be joined from Padstow Harbour. Simply keep going, and going and going… Along the way you will pass another smaller beach, St George’s Cove, which is recognisable by it’s very lush green surroundings. Resist the temptation to stop there and carry on because you’re nearly there!

Once you’ve parked, follow the coast path down the track, through a small woods and everything suddenly opens up and Harbour Cove beach is slowly revealed 🙂

Coastal Walks Cornwall: Porthcurno to Porthgwarra

Coastal Walk Cornwall - Porthcurno Beach to Porthgwarra Beach

Coastal Walk Cornwall - Porthcurno Beach to Porthgwarra Beach

It was a beautiful day in Cornwall yesterday, so we packed our sandwiches and took to the coast path for the round trip walk from Porthcurno beach to Porthgwarra beach. Along the way we passed the world famous Minack Theatre, Porthchapel Beach and St Levans Church and Well. Here’s our photo journey.

Gorgeous view over Porthcurno beach from the coastal path

Steep steps along the coastal path from Porthcurno beach to the Minack Theatre

Above: The coastal path from Porthcurno beach to the Minack Theatre is breathtaking, but very steep and precarious, with no safety rails. We would advise any one who is not a confident walker / hiker to take the alternative route along the main road from Porthcurno car park.

Coastal path signs in Minack theatre car park

Above: When you reach the Minack Theatre, walk through the car park and you will see a signposted gate where the coastal path continues.

View of Porthchapel beach

Above: Once you walk around the first point you are greeted by the beautiful, unspoilt Porthchapel beach. At the top, there’s lots of big rocks you can sit on and watch the world go by.

Steep way down to Porthchapel beach

Above: The journey down to Porthchapel beach is not for the faint hearted. There’s no pathway, just steep rocks that have been formed into native looking steps.

Above: You’re rewarded once you get down onto the sand though! Sheltered unspoilt beach with soft golden sand.

Porthgwarra Beach in Cornwall - 360º Beaches

Once you make it to Porthgwarra, you can’t help but admire it’s beauty. It’s such a lovely place – small but perfectly formed 🙂 Back in the day, it used to be a busy fishing cove, but not many boats fish from here now. Dotted around the beach, are lovely reminders of times gone by, such as the winch to pull boats up out of the tide, hooks to tie the boats down and most fascinating of all – the man made tunnels cut out of the rocks…

Seaweed Tunnels in Porthgwarra Beach in West Cornwall - 360º beaches

Above – These fascinating man-made tunnels that cut through the rocks were blasted out using explosives by the local miners, enabling farmers to transport seaweed from the beach using horse and cart, which was then used as fertiliser.

Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival 13th-15th June 2014

Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival 2014 Cornwall

Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival 2014 Cornwall
Ahoy,me hearties! This year’s International Sea Shanty Festival in Falmouth is just around the corner and is a ‘must see’ if you are on holiday in Cornwall. The event, which takes place this weekend (13-15th June) features 46 shanty groups singing over 261 hours of songs across 21 venues throughout the town.

The weather forecast looks great and Falmouth will be filled with music, singing and infused with a great community spirit.

Originally founded by a group of local singers in 2003, the events mission is to keep alive the history of tall ships and days of sail, while at the same time promoting the marine heritage of Falmouth. Attracting thousands of visitors each year the festival has become one of the largest of it’s kind, with shanty groups coming from the UK and as far as Europe to perform. Money raised at the event is donated to the RNLI to help save lives at sea.

Town Manager and Chairman of the Organising Committee, Richard Gates expects “2014 to be an exciting year for Falmouth with an ever growing calendar of events with Falmouth’s International Sea Shanty festival being one of the highlights of the summer program.”

Browse this years programme of events below, or visit the official website HERE for more info.

New Spa complex overlooking Gyllyngvase Beach planned for Falmouth, Cornwall

Development plans have been unveiled in Falmouth for a new £25m spa complex on the former site of the Falmouth Beach Hotel, which was destroyed in a fire two years ago. The site is a stones throw from Gyllyngvase Beach with beautiful views over Falmouth Bay.

Headed by St Michaels Hotel & Spa, the proposed scheme would include 51 beach sea view apartments, 30 new hotel suits, six woodland eco-lodges, three restaurants, a health club and two retail outlets focusing upon local Cornish produce.

If approved, the new St Michaels Spa & Wellness resort would create 70 new permanent jobs and bring increased business to the seaside town of Falmouth. St Michael’s owner, Nigel Carpenter, said: “This is a town which encourages creativity, vision and progress. We hope to develop an outstanding, premium-quality resort which will create many jobs for local people and bring a lot of business to the town.”

We at 360beaches are all for the positive development of Cornish towns and this looks like it will be enjoyed both by local people and tourists, crucially all year round, so we hope the planning process goes well and they can start building as soon as possible!
